Wanting to learn how to freeze a baked apple pie? Whether you’ve bought a baked apple pie from the store that’s quickly going out of date, or baked one at home and simply can’t manage to eat it all in time.
These methods will ensure that your apple pie can be stored safely and enjoyed in the months to come.
When To Freeze A Baked Apple Pie
You should freeze a baked apple pie once it’s naturally cooled and no later than 48 hours after the cooking process has been completed for the best results.
If you’re planning on freezing an unbaked apple pie you can do so as soon as the pie has been made (or purchased). You should freeze unbaked apple pies from the store before the best before the date and for homemade unbaked apple pies no later than 48 hours after the creation of the pie.
Tools & Equipment For Freezing Food
These are my tried and tested tools and equipment for freezing food.
Whether it’s fresh fruits or completely prepared meals these tools will make the process easier, and the food last longer and taste better!
Containers – We opt for glass containers as they are better for the environment, much higher quality and don’t stain like plastic, however they are an investment.
So if you’re short on money buy high-quality plastic containers in the meantime.
Just be sure that you buy your containers in a range of sizes as you’ll be using them to freeze and store a range of different foods.
Ziplock Bags – Invest in quality freezer bags and they’ll help keep out air, prevent frost and keep your food fresh for longer.
The majority of the high-quality ziplock bags come with a small area for you to write information about the food (i.e. what it is, when it was frozen and defrosting instructions) on the bag.
Ice Cube Trays – Ice cube trays can help you freeze more than just water. Instead, we use them for freezing small portions of food such as egg whites, tomato sauce, pesto etc.
Simply add the food to the tray, freeze and once frozen pop the food out and into a ziplock bag, then you can simply take one or two portions of food out and defrost as needed.
Foil Baking Containers – We use foil baking containers when we’re batch cooking frozen meals.
They are affordable, durable and come in a variety of sizes allowing you to portion out or put everything in one large container to be cooked at a later date.
If all that wasn’t enough, the majority of meals are safe to be cooked in the oven with the foil container. This reduces the amount of hassle, time and washing up you’ll have to do – winner!
How To Freeze A Baked Apple Pie
The process between freezing a baked apple pie and an uncooked apple pie is different. Be sure to read this article if you’re looking to freeze and uncooked apple pie instead.
Start by ensuring that your pie has completely cooled before attempting to freeze it.
This process will take around eight hours.
A pie can be lightly wrapped on the surface sides and is still safe to consume for up to two days. If stored in the refrigerator you can still consume your cooked apple pie for up to four days.
Once your pie has fully cooled you can begin preparing it for the freezer.
Start by wrapping the pie tightly with either a plastic freeze wrap, in some aluminium foil or in a strong heavy-duty freezer bag.
Be sure to write the contents and the date of freezing on the wrapper so you can remember what the item is and when it needs to be consumed by.
Then you can place your pie into the freezer. For the least amount of damage store, it base down as you would on the kitchen counter or when serving.
Most pies take up to 24 hours to fully freeze in a domestic refrigerator.
A baked apple pie can be consumed up to three months after freezing in a domestic refrigerator.
How To Defrost A Baked Apple Pie
For the best results, I recommend removing the apple pie from the freezer and defrosting it in the refrigerator.
Due to the density of the pie, the process is likely to take around 24 hours.
I recommend popping a plate or a towel underneath the pie to stop any water residue leaking in the fridge.
Once the pie has fully defrosted you can re-heat it in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes.
How To Tell If Your Apple Pie Has Gone Bad
You can tell if your apple pie has gone bad by the smell and texture of the pie. If you notice the pie has a strong negative odor or is developing signs of mold you should throw it away.
Storing your apple pie safely either in the refrigerator for 2 – 3 days, under a sheet at room temperature for 24 hours, or in the freezer is the best way to ensure that your apple pie remains safe for consumption.
Eating an apple pie that has gone bad could cause you to have food poisoning. If you are unsure or have any doubts it’s best to just throw it away.
