How To Cook Taco Meat In The Crock Pot
Tacos are a family favorite around here – I make them almost every week. I started to make larger batches of our homemade taco seasoning mix to shave a few minutes off my prep time and then I realized I could go a step further and just cook up a huge batch of taco meat and freeze it in meal-sized portions.
And, to save even more time, I figured that I could cook taco meat in the crock pot!
Bulk Cook Ground Beef In The Crock Pot

All you need to do is put the ground beef in the crock pot, cover, set it to high, and let it cook away (for about 3 hours), giving it the occasional stir to break up the bigger pieces. I love to use a chopping utensil to break up the pieces.
At that point, you can drain the meat, give it a rinse, and package it up for the freezer in some freezer bags.
Can I Use This Taco Recipe For Other Meat?
Yes, you of course can. This recipe works well for other meats such as chicken and turkey.
You may find that you need to check the moisture levels more on chicken and turkey as they can dry out quicker than beef.
What Dishes Can I Use Taco Meat In?
We often find we have taco meat left over which we like to make into other meals so we can save on food waste.
Here are a few ideas of what you can use your leftover taco meat in;

Can I Freeze Cooked Taco Meat?
Yes, this taco meat can be frozen. The meat needs to be completely cooled and placed ina airtight container before freezing.
Place in the freezer and eat within 2-3 months of the freeze date.
To defrost simply remove the container from the freezer to thaw out over 12 hours.
Cooking Taco Meat In The Crock Pot
If you want to go a step further and turn that browned beef into taco meat, put it back into the crock pot (after you’ve drained and rinsed it) with some taco seasoning and water and let it cook away for a few more hours.
When it’s done to your liking, let it cool before packaging it up for the freezer. It’s so much easier to cook taco meat in the crock pot than in a frying pan!
- 5 pounds ground beef
- 1 cup taco seasoning
- 2 cups of water
- Cook the ground beef in the crock pot for about 3 hours on high heat, occasionally stirring to break the meat up into pieces.
- When it’s cooked, drain and rinse the beef before returning it back to the crock pot.
- Add the taco seasoning and water, mixing well.
- Cover and let cook 2 more hours, stirring after the first hour.
- Cool and package in family-sized portions before freezing.
